From sports teams to classes to the creative arts, Coronado island offers endless activities for the littlest locals and out-of-town visitors. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorite kid-friendly activities and establishments on the island.
Children of all ages can join gymnastic classes at Island Tumble where the emphasis is on having fun, building strength and agility, and increasing balance and flexibility. Personal training is also available for all ages. Located at: 1206 Tenth Street; 619-300-1717
The Coronado Dance Academy in Coronado provides classes for Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Mini-Hop (for the very young) and Hip-Hop (co-ed). The academy strives to teach self control, discipline, respect and self awareness with their kid-friendly curriculum. Located at: 952 Orange Avenue; 619-435-6436
Coronado Karate has been an island favorite for children and adults for many years. The multi-level classes for children of all ages build life-long skills and develop unshakeable self-esteem and self-respect. Located at: 1005 “C” Avenue; 619-435-8223
The Coronado Yacht Club offers a fabulous sailing program for children and teens and its open to non-members. With its small fleet of training sailboats and water craft, the program teaches multi-skill levels of sailors self-respect, responsibility, team work, sporting conduct and appreciation of the environment. Skaters from beginners to masters can practice their best moves at the sculpture skate park built by the City of Coronado in Tidelands Park, just off the San Diego Coronado Bridge. The ramps, bowls, grinds and jumps at this world-class skate park are featured in three bowls. The Street Plaza, with a crater 2′ – 3′ deep is best suited for beginners; The Clover Bowl offers a 5′-7′ crater for the intermediate skater; and The Tear Drop is not for the faint of heart. The City of Coronado has a robust Recreation Service Department offering a vast array of programs for preschoolers, children and teens. There’s everything under the sun including tennis classes, summer camps, day camps throughout the summer and on school holidays, aquatics camps including swimming classes, water polo, diving instruction, and even surfing lessons. Enrichment programs throughout the year include classes for drama, games, music, crafts and cooking, art and book clubs, jump rope, gymnastics, dance, pee wee sports, basketball, lawn bowling, rock climbing, junior tennis, lifeguard and water safety training, and tae kwon do (to name just a few!).
Specialty programs and sports activities are offered for all ages from pre-school, youth, to teens. The teen programs include activities hosted in the Club Room with programs involving games, video, cuisine, classes, and a variety of outdoor and beach activities.

The staff at our city’s beautiful and historic library works hard to provide a vibrant program for youth. For the wee ones there are Story Hours on Tuesdays and Fridays for toddlers at 10:10 and for preschoolers at 10:45 (Spanish speaking Story Hour is held on Thursdays at 10:45). There are crafts for kids and tweens on every other Tuesday, and teens age 6th-12th grade meet on Wednesdays for movies, games and author visits. There are also Book Clubs for middle school and high school age students. Library hours are Monday-Thursday 10:00-9:00; Friday and Saturday 10:00-6:00; Sunday 1:00-5:00.
